use mirroring, labelling and phrases like, "seems like" or "looks like"; it is info asymmetry strategy.
If you need to force empathy, you use a question: "How am I supposed to do xyz or know that he is alive?" or similar derivatives thereof.
Putin, a KGB guy, knows how to stop it, he shuts her line of questioning down after softening her up with his comedy wining and dining from before.
If you want to shut down a forced empathy question: you should say, "you will figure it out" or similar.
