This term "master mahan"; which phonetically, in my view, will be pronounced "master mahon" is similar to master mason -- our third degree blue lodge Freemasons after entered apprentices (1st degree) and fellow craft freemasons (2nd degree).

It is not clear if John, Alex, Tom and Jim were masons or not, due to the fact that rumors circulate, there's a lack of evidence as well, but apparently they were not. Out of confusion and erroneous sources, I accidentally said they were masons, but they weren't.
