Mamdani’s three main endorsed candidates won Democratic congressional primaries in New York City.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s three main endorsed candidates won Democratic congressional primaries in New York City. Brad Lander defeated incumbent Daniel Goldman by roughly 30 points. Claire Valdez won an open Brooklyn–Queens seat. Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly defeated incumbent Adriano Espaillat. The candidates shared Mamdani’s progressive economic agenda and opposed continued U.S. support for Israel. The results could double the number of socialists in Congress from two to four. Mamdani’s intervention angered Democratic leaders, unions and former allies, but established him as a powerful New York political kingmaker. The Times cautions that these victories occurred in districts where Mamdani was already popular, so they do not necessarily prove wider national appeal.
