This was a short cultural check-in: a red-string symbol, a family lunch, and a memory of my father’s death that still sat close enough to spill into the meal.

I saw Thilanga mami was seated in front of us during our lunch
(when it was our turn to eat after the monks)

that Thilanga uncle took a photo of him to the morgue
to make it look as much like him as possible --
to respect what Thilanga mami did for us that dark day
(and also to spoil their alms giving/ Dhaneya lunches).
I remember that one bad day every day...
It feels like it happened just last Thursday..
I remember Thilanga mami delivered a speech
of what my Thathi had written as part of his Last Will.
I can't remember exactly what was written
(I was 12 years old)
But I remember in the end, he bid all his friends and his enemies:
"good night"
May Thathi's Soul Rest In Peace.
