I Wanted to Run to Boston, Where No One Knows My Name
June 26, 2025
Augustana’s “Boston” becomes a map for leaving baggage behind—two people caught, caring, and pretending not to. The hook lands as a concrete plan: first earned dollar since 2017, a clean restart away from surveillance A start-over fantasy in lyric form: leave California, disappear into summer and snow, and use 'Boston' as shorthand for a cleaner life

Augustana - Boston (Video)
[Verse 1]
In the light of the sun, is there anyone?
Oh it has begun
Oh dear you look so lost, eyes are red and tears are shed
This world you must've crossed
You said
This is one of my favorite songs.
Written by Dan Layus, Justin South, Jared Palomar, and Josiah Rozencwajg.

Below is my personal interpretation of its themes (paraphrased, not quoting the lyrics):
The opening evokes someone searching in broad daylight, as if asking the world to witness them.
It sketches two people on a shared journey—crossing distance and difficulty together.
A sudden flash—like a camera—suggests clarity breaking through the haze.
A question about “anyone” reads to me as a hint of hiding or retreat, a fear of being seen.
The turning point signals that feelings have started and can’t be undone.
A face that seems lost and tear-streaked signals exhaustion and overwhelm.
Finally, there’s a flush of feeling—blushing, infatuation, the early heat of love.
My hope is that this post adds appreciation and value to the artists’ work by engaging with it thoughtfully and encouraging others to listen and support them.
Interpreting “Boston” as Chains and Hidden Feelings
[Chorus]
You don't know me, you don't even care, oh yeah
And you said
You don't know me, and you don't wear my chains... oh yeah
It just means, that, they are stilling storming
They are wearing "chains" like their baggage
They are both engaged to other people
So they do act like they don't care
And are playing around
Although, they clearly have fallen in love
Interpreting an Open Field as Relationship Insecurity
[Verse 2]
Essential yet appealed
Carry all your thoughts
Across an open field
Over here, this fiance is worried
The open field, for thoughts, is scary
He is clearly hurt, she is hurt too
I guess, she likes him, and is saddened
She doesn't want to hurt his feelings
He also, likes her, and is afraid to lose her
He aso, is feeling insecure now
Applying Augustana’s Music to a Movie Scene
When flowers gaze at you
They're not the only ones
Who cry when they see you
Oh, you said
I will am just a lover of music
I am just a writer of my diary
Like 8b people write their own
I will go ask for permission to share
I can pay $0.01 or whatever price is fair
But I am not selling this on its own
I am just applying that music to the movie
It's got a totally different, renewed meaning
I'm just celebrating the music and movie
These lyrics don't belong to me
But they are words and songs I love
I have sung them to myself for years
I don't want to explain what they mean
I think you need to decide for yourself
The flowers, remind me of Rosie
And her friend, Meg Ryan
And the way they cried seeing this
They are the audience, like God
They are feeling empathy for her
And also for him, and her, and him
And feel very saddened by it all
This hook, is key
The bit where she says:
"I think I'll go back to Boston"
It's this, that triggers me to share it
Nobody else, has put that song to this film
It's what gives the song weight here
If I was director, I'd add it to this scene
Or use the musical score by Augustana
Finding a Song Hook Vital to a Movie
[Chorus]
You don't know me, you don't even care, oh yeah
Well you said
You don't know me, and you don't wear my chains... oh yeah
This hook, is vital to this movie
It mirrors how she's going to get a job too
Her soul is already attached to the guy
They are both doing the same thing
And she is trying to break loose of this one
Starting Over, Earning a First Dollar and Boston
[Bridge]
She said I think I'll go to Boston
I think I'll start a new life
Well, obviously, it is my diary
So I am thinking of Pauline
But -- it's also echoing how I'll earn
I have earned $0 dollars since 2017
So it'll be the first time I'm earning
And I think the thrill of earning that
FIRST DOLLAR is going to be cool.
It's also, about how, how I want to start anew
How it's a breath of new life from God
A life, freed from the Eye of Sauron CCTV
Which reigned terror over me for 23+ years
California, Sri Lanka Heat and Wishful Thinking of Spain
I think I'll start it over, where no one knows my name
I'll get out of California, I'm tired of the weather
I think I'll get a lover and fly 'em out to Spain
Over here, I imagine myself in his shoes again
The shoe leather cost isn't very high
As he does a good job as a painter
He is a artist
I also, set up AngryPages Inc in California
Out of respect for my former publicist in CA
He gave me a lot of confidence
And those people are very cool over there
I am tired of the weather, it means to me
Oh it's sweltering hot in Sri Lanka, humid
And I want to leave the place
The lover, fly out to spain, is wishful thinking
And look, lo n behold, the guy's first dollar
Boston, Sunrise and Wanting to Leave Defeats Behind
Oh yeah and I think I'll go to Boston
I think that I'm just tired
I think I need a new town, to leave this all behind
I think I need a sunrise, I'm tired of the sunset
Sunrise, has a special meaning for me
It represents God to me in human form
And in my many defeats in Sri Lanka
I often viewed leaving as an "escape"
Snow in Sleepless in Seattle and “Boston”
I hear it's nice in the summer, some snow would be nice
Oh yeah
Over here, in Sleepless in Seattle..
And it's incredible, I'm the one to point it out
The movie takes place, during Christmas
Or during the snow
So, it's interesting they show it here
And then, the song is overlapping on top
And singing about how snow would be nice
